Reiki

What is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy healing system that was ‘discovered’ by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. It is a non-invasive therapy which promotes relaxation and healing. The important thing about Reiki is that it is very much up to the recipient how (and indeed if) they choose to use and accept the energy.
Reiki is best translated as meaning ‘universal life energy’. This energy is channelled and transmitted to the client through laying on of hands through a series of hand positions or by working in the aura of the client. Reiki can also be sent over distance (absent healing).
Reiki can work on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reiki promotes relaxation and healing by helping to remove energy blockages and balance the flow of energy through the body. Reiki goes where it is most needed and can never be harmful in any way.
Someone wishing to channel Reiki themselves can do so through learning some simple techniques and being ‘attuned’ to the energy by a Reiki Master Teacher. There are a number of different levels of Reiki taught starting at level one, which is most concerned with self healing, through practitioner levels and up to Master Teacher level.
What happens during a Reiki treatment?
Reiki is usually given to a client while they lie fully clothed on a couch (although can be given to client whilst they sit in a chair if this is preferred). The client is able to relax and have soft music playing in the background if they wish. They may also be guided through a relaxing meditation. The session usually lasts about an hour.
The therapist will place and hold their hands on different parts of your body to allow the channelled Reiki energy to be transmitted to the client. Work may also be carried out in the aura in which case the therapist may not be touching you physically. At all times your personal space will be respected and you will not be made to feel at all uncomfortable.
The Reiki experience can be very profound and personal. Some feel that a lot of heat is generated, others feel cold or tingling. Some feel nothing at all except a sense of well-being and relaxation. No one reaction is better than another as the Reiki will work in a way that suits your needs and your highest good at that specific time.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Reiki is completely safe and can instil a deep level of relaxation and a feeling of well-being. It can be effective on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Reiki can allow you to find balance and peace within yourself. It is useful in the treatment of a variety of conditions including:
- Stress
- Insomnia
- Headaches and migraines
- Pain relief
- Digestive disorders
- Allergies
- Depression
- Grief
Reiki and self healing
One of the beauties of Reiki is that it is a simple technique to learn and can then be administered to oneself in the form of ‘self healing’. This is the main, but not only, benefit of learning Reiki at level one.
Self healing can then be done every day by placing your own hands in variety of positions on your own body allowing the Reiki energy to be channelled through you.
You can also ‘Reiki’ the food you eat, the water you drink, your environment and situations around you that require energy and healing.
Learning Reiki
Level one
You will learn the basics of Reiki, from its history and its many uses, to how to perform Reiki on yourself, family and friends. This degree does not allow you to practice Reiki on the public or accept payment for giving Reiki to others. Reiki levels two and above are practitioner/professional levels.
There will be ongoing support after your training and you will also be encouraged to attend regular Reiki share groups.
The course will include:
- What is Reiki and how can it be used?
- History of Reiki
- Self-treatment
- Hand positions for treating others
- Meditation
- The chakra system
- 4 attunements given over the course of the training
- The Reiki principles and ethics
The course will be a mixture of lecture, demonstration and practical exercises. You will receive a manual at the beginning of the course and a certificate will be awarded after you have completed the course to my satisfaction. There will be some homework and you will be expected to perform self-healing and practise on family and friends during the course. I would also encourage you to keep a journal of your experiences.
Level two
This is a practitioner level and on completion and passing the necessary assignments and assessments you will be able to work in a professional capacity.
My aim is to provide you with the tools, techniques and as much guidance and support as I can offer in order for you to be able to develop and work as a Reiki practitioner. You will receive training and be expected to undergo both practical and written assignments, complete a series of case studies, pass a basic anatomy and physiology test and be aware of the need for continuous professional development before being awarded your Reiki two certificate. There will also be some work to complete on the ‘business’ side of Reiki, including health and safety, regulations, the consultation and aftercare advice, setting up your own practice, pricing and marketing. Support will be available throughout this process and is not a journey you will travel alone.
Reiki two will include:
- Further attunements to the Reiki energy
- Introduction of the Reiki symbols
- Additional techniques and hand positions for specific conditions
- Use of scanning and dowsing
- Consultation techniques
- Meditation
